This mature phase of Taylor's music is still blooming almost 20 years later, and continues to influence, inspire, and provoke. Garden, Pt. But in keeping with Gene Simmons's ambition to be "Disney without the overhead," Kiss can still deliver quality.

The standouts are the rare early demos, especially those from the band's first sessions and its previous incarnation Album) Wicked Lester. Though the music has varied wildly through the years, from awesome to atrocious on any given album, this is a high-quality box. By all accounts, Curt Boettcher was a perfectionist, a control freak, a megalomaniac and a fount of unrealistic ambition.

In other words, he was what some call a genius, especially in the genre of innovative 60's partly sunny psychedelic soft-pop. With such a temperament, it only makes sense that his bands didn't last long. Thus, this collection contains music, most of it long unavailable, from several different Boettcher groups, chiefly the Millennium and Ballroom, with additional material from Sagittarius, Summer's Children and his solo work.

The beauty of The Garden - Philip Glass - Anima Mundi (Original Soundtrack Recording) (CD music is the tension between two different impulses: toward simple, almost cloying soft rock and toward wickedly meticulous innovation. Imagine Brian Wilson if he lived near a floral garden instead of the ocean.

Despite some saccharine moments, these CD's especially the Millennium disc are a testament to a master arranger, composer, musician and producer who left behind a wide and underappreciated legacy of a dialectical pop that reveled in the happy, sad and simple complex. Carlos Santana's younger brother, Jorge, played guitar in his own bilingual Latin-rock band in the early 's: Malo.

With its own mixture of mambo, soul, jazz and rock, Malo was earthier, less pop-oriented and far less guitar-dominated than Santana; its funk recalls another Bay Area band, Tower of Power. The box holds Malo's four complete Warners albums, with their singles appended. Malo was best at propulsive uptempo jams with horns and percussion constantly spurring each other, and it's a pity that some faded-out tracks weren't restored and extended for the new CD's.

Malo's ballads, wisely, were infrequent, but the fast songs burn. It's difficult getting to know Monk's later period: he repeated old songs endlessly in the 's, and sure, every note counts — it's Monk.

But a person has only so many dollars to part with. This set wisely gathers the best of the late work, varying between his working quartet, solo performances and three different big-band line-ups.

The quartet music has undeniable strength, but some of the best material here is Monk alone; some is little-remembered, a bit previously unreleased. Chano Pozo, a muscular conga player who briefly Album) American audiences in Dizzy Gillespie's late's band and was murdered inbecomes a footnote in most jazz histories. But he was a Yoruban religious initiate and a composer as well, and has a primary role in the Latinizing of jazz — a continuing process.

The set presents him first as a composer, then as a performer in Cuban music and finally in Afro-Cuban jazz. For a history of the first wave of Afro-Cuban jazz as well as what it came from, this is the place to look. These records, made from tocame largely before the notion of Stitt as a production-line Charlie Parker clone had become a hardened commonplace. Stitt was fresh then: he had just turned to tenor saxophone three years before the first session here, "Symphony Hall Swing.

The great alto saxophonist, his career revived after a jail stint, died soon after the last of these sessions.
